windows update will not work

Recently upgraded a fairly old Toshiba Portege laptop to WinXP, then SP2.
Whenever I go to Windows Update and choose either Express or Custom, my
system is checked for whatever updates are needed and then just at the point
where the list of available updates would be displayed, IE closes. No error
messages, no nothing.

Right now I only have the OS installed, but on a prior attempt I had already
installed Office03 and found that running Office Update produced the same
behavior.

Also, it is interesting to note that if I have Automatic Updates on, they
are downloaded in the background and seem to install with no problem. I
can't say they are for sure because if I choose Update History on the Windows
Update page it also causes IE to close.

Help!

I have a new one for you, that is an offshoot of my previous problem.

My problem is, I get multiple windows opening as opposed to the new
double-clicked folder being displayed in the same window.

I do have "open each folder in the same window" selected and applied to all
folders. I made sure of this in control panel --> folder options.

It seems that when I associated the action of "open" to my file folders, I
chose the explore.exe function to run. Does anyone know what program should
be associated with the open function? (This selection can be found under
Folder Options ---> File Types Tab ---> File Type: single-click Folder or
File Folder, then click advanced.)

I need to make a new function of open, but using the right program!!
