Windows update VIA IDE - Blue Screen warning!!!

There is a Windows update hardware option that has appeared on the
Windows Update site for VIA IDE controller.

PROCEED WITH CAUTION for this update.

We have several (as in more than 50) Dell GX270 machines at my place of
work, and when running/installing this update on them, they BLUE SCREEN
when restarted! They will not restart in safe mode - that results in a
BSOD too!

I also got this update showing as available on my own homebuilt PC which
_DOES_ _NOT_ have a VIA chipset.

It is also showing on my Dell XPS laptop, which doesn't show as having a
VIA controller either (although I'm not sure what controller it actually
has, it does show a Intel 82801)

Whether this update will have the same adverse affect on other machines,
I know not, but i'm certainly not downloading it.

Another concern, is it is shown as a 2006 update??

Just a heads up.

I see it too and my laptop doesn't have a VIA chipset either... its been
there for some weeks at least as I first saw it about 3 weeks ago. I wasn't
going to install it anyway but thanks for the warning.

I occassionally get a hardware update listed and actually test it from
Microsoft.
Not before imaging the machine however.

I ran across this one (the one you speak of) on a Dell OptiPlex 745 (brand
new machine) that I was REAL sure did not have the VIA chipset and decided
to test it today.

It - in fact - crashed the machine horribly and I restored from image.

This is why most people (I know I do) recommend not getting hardware drivers
from Windows/Microsoft Update.
They didn't make most of your hardware, why trust them to have the
latest/best driver for it?

It only appeared today for us at work, and we do updates quite
regularly.

Likewise I did a check on Tuesday at home, as MS had released some new
updates. I didn't see it then.

I think something weird is occurring... more than just a dodgy update...

I updated yesterday and this update wasn't there. I updated today and this
update was there. On restart, Windows kept crashing as it booted. The
computer started OK when selecting Last Known Good Configuration.

Unfortunately, I downloaded this update. As a result I can not boot up even
in Safe mode. My system just keeps rebooting. PLEASE HELP, IS THERE ANYONE
OUT THERE THAT HAS A FIX FOR THIS?

It looks like MS have clearly got a problem with this update. Are there
any 'official' channels this can go through to make them aware??

Do the MVP's have any way of letting MS know?

Boot to the Safe Mode screen and select

"Last known good configuration"

I'm getting exactly the same problem tonight. No malware, the right
website, it's just a bad update.

Yeah I installed it because I have a VIA chipset kt400a, BSOD on reboot, had
to go for last good configuration to boot.
