XP Pro. Followed the instructions and took the advice
given to download critical downloads. This took 35 minutes
after which, it shut down to re-start. Got to the password
box with the invitation to logon. I've never ever used a
password, don't have one thus, I'm locked out through no
fault of my own.
This has happened three times and I've managed to get
back in via F8 and selected ...."last known best that
worked." etc.

For goodness sake, which update number is it that causing
me so much grief ?

I don't recall which number any longer but it's likely the dot net update,
you can find it in the descriptions of the updates at Windows Update. That
said, if you never created a password, you probably could log on by leaving
the password blank and pressing enter.

Then, to return to your previous method which apparently didn't include
logging on, click on Start and run: type in control userpasswords2
Uncheck the box User must enter a username and password.
