Windows update Stage 3 of 3 endless reboot

We have a problem for which there seem to be countless posts from other
frustrated Vista users - a Windows Update gets applied and the Vista machine
goes into an endless loop of rebooting after saying 'Stage 3 of 3'.

We took the computer to our local computer shop recently (in July 2009) and
they reinstalled Vista for several hundred bucks (because we didn't have the
skills to do a repair). But when we got it home - voila! it does it again!

Has Microsoft not fixed this problem? Is there not a permanent fix to it? It
makes me want to buy a mac and throw Vista in the garbage. Everyone I know
(everyone!) who went to Vista wishes they had stayed on XP until the 'fixed
Vista' is released, which I understand is in Oct 09). Vista and Windows ME
will go down in history as the worst operating systems that any company ever
created.

Now that I've finished whining, does anyone have any answers?

Thanks for help in advance,

Gerald

The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message, and the
computer restarts when you try to install an update in Windows Vista

Buy or find Windows XP Pro and install it. I have fixed a friends 4 times
using Microsofts instructions and it keeps coming back. After installing XP
Pro, and completed all updates over several hours, the computer works great.
By the way, back up all your files first! You will also have to re-install
every program installed on your machine as well.

I have 2 machines, one came with vista and I immediately installed XP Pro.
I have never had a problem. I am not even willing to go to Windows 7 and I
know of no large company willing to risk it either. I consult to several
major oil and gas companies in Alberta. Most are using XP Pro or Win 2000
and are still quite happy with either.

i had the same problem and i solved it with 3 points hope that can help
1)change in windows update automatic to manual .
2)restore sytem using a date 3 days ago
3) re-do point 1 because point 2 has changed cofiguration you made in 1)

This worked for me, simple and easy!

Fix Infinate loop for Vista update install…

1. Insert your Vista Media into your dirve and boot from it.
2. Select “Repair your Computer†from the list.
3. Select “Command Prompt†from the recovery choices.
4. At the command prompt type C:
5. Type cd Windows\WinSxS
6. Type del pending.xml
7. Exit and reboot

Works w/o restore or reg fixes… simple quick, easy…. what else is there?
