Windows Update Site Freezes My PC

Each time I go directly to the Windows Update site my computer freezes up.
This occurs at different times. For example, sometimes I open the site and
the site fails to get to the part where it checks the software version for
updating. Other times, I can get as far as the "Express" and "Custom" option
buttons. Clicking either one of the buttons immediately locks up IE. Thank
you in advance for your help.

I have a bit more information. Looking in the windows update log, I can
compare an update that fails to a successful update. In the update that
fails, the last recorded line reads:

2006-05-10 20:52:03 2440 b40 Setup * IsUpdateRequired = No

In a successful update, the next lines appear, however in a freeze situation
there is nothing and I need to reboot my PC:

If no joy...

Screen freezes with IE are most commonly caused by video drivers that need
updating. Go to the web site of your video card manufacturer and get the
latest drivers for your card. As a work around, try turning down your
hardware acceleration, color depth, and/or screen resolution. If these
work, then new drivers are in order.

Other causes are scripting engines that need reinstalled or updated:

Or Java: http://www.java.com/en/

And, if you are using a McAfee anti-virus program, and it's set to scan all
files, try changing it to scan programs and documents only.
