I'm still getting the same error some four hours later. Has anyone been
able to successfully download the patches due to be made available today?

Hi Bill
Its Black Tuesday - what did you expect - there are hundreds who still have
not got their SP2 to load - then they have all the other 50-60-70 updates to
get after that + there are those of us trying to get this months.
Have you had a look in on the updates group - its a worse start than last
month :-(
Think I'll wait a week, like last time - things get a bit quieter.

There has been a delay with the patches - there are problems on the WU servers.
Please try at a later time.

I don't think you have mentioned the error number at all.
OR look in the update group - as previously suggested :-)

This month has topped the last 2 !
You can still download the Office updates from the Office site whilst waiting.

Hi TA
Its about 25% up on my count - that's not counting the double posts by the
web lot and a couple of lunatics posting nothing.
But we have you, Mow and the others to hold our hands and guide us through
the mire.
I feel sorry for those who left SP1 to SP2 so late.
God knows how many of them are still unresolved over the last two to three
months.
I do not remember MS putting out any statement last month when their WU went
down.

It appears to be working now in my area - maybe some are still having problems.
Yes, pity that so many left SP 2 so late.
I can't remember any statements last month either but then again, I don't get told
anything.
All 7 updates for Windows installed successfully.
I manually installed the Office updates earlier this morning.
Have a good day/evening, Antioch

I have now been able to download the latest patches. It would seem that
either there was a problem with the Microsoft server or it was inundated
with traffic. It makes me question the reliability of the Microsoft update
service if Microsoft itself is having a problem keeping up with demand.

Hi Bill
The MS sites cannot take the hits - just look at the traffic that is in the
update group.
For the last three months there has been an obvious increase in the SP1 to
SP2 'got to get updated'.
In April I can only remember seeing a couple with probs. with SP2.
Since then each month there has been an increase, plus a couple of large
criticals for everybody plus those with SP2 problems being compounded each
month plus all the extra probs with the last 3 months updates - its is
ridiculous that MS cause this stampede - they should issue as and when they
have a critical like some do.
Their site will crash every month unless they sort something out.
I have still to be offered this months :-(

Antioch commented that <should issue as and when they have a critical like
some do.>.

I made a similar comment some time ago. It is quite logical to argue that,
on practical and moral grounds, if there is a known 'weakness' with a remedy
the patch should be made available immediately. The response was something
along the lines that this would require network managers to make several
updates to every computer on the network every month instead of just once a
month - and that they would probably still do it once a month. There was
also something along the lines that issuing a patch 'as-and-when' would make
spyware and virus writers more aware as to what may be vulnerable until
network managers got around to effecting patches.

There is a ring of truth in these arguments and, if it is truly a problem
for network managers, I can sympathise. However, it would seem that MS is
heavily biased to easing the life of network managers. My view is that
patches should be made available as soon as available and that it is then up
to users to install them immediately or not.

Regards.

MS releases Critical Security updates "out of band" when there is a PoC
exploiting a vulnerability that can affect a sizeable number of systems.
They monitor these exploits, whether they be from malicious web sites,
emails, etc.
When the VML exploit became more widely spread, MS released the update
for it.

They don't just rewrite some code and then throw the update out there.
It must be tested for adverse effects and changes in functionality. With
all the different soft|hardware permutations existing in the Windows
sphere, it's amazing that the updates don't cause more issues.

Is the current methodology for releasing updates perfect ? No
Will it ever be ? No
Is it a viable means of getting updates to Users ? Yes
