I hope that someone can help.

My computer has downloaded some updates but no installed them. When I try
to turn off the computer it says that it will install the updates prior to
shutting down or I can shut down without installing. I do the latter.

How I can se what the updates are before installation? I do not want to
install IE7. I don't mind installing the security updates, but I want to
choose. I can see the icon I normally see for updating in the system tray.

Any help would be appreciated.

Why not turn off "auto updates" in xp,at this atage for xp the updates a
getting
far & few between,& only 1 or 2 a week if that.At windows update (manual),or
microsoft update, simply select "custom" then all updates are presented to you
to select & install if wanted....

Left-click on the yellow shield. This will bring up the Install Updates box.
There are two choices: Express and Custom. Choose Custom and click Next.
This will allow you to see what updates are in the queue. Uncheck any
driver updates and if you don't want IE7, uncheck that one too. After
you've done this, you'll get a dialog box giving you the option to not be
shown those updates again. Put a check in the box.

"at this atage for xp..."
More fiction from you.
Since Microsoft changed to monthly updates a few years ago, the second
Tuesday of the month is when updates become available except in rare
occasions.
And unfortunately since those wanting to damage, take over or otherwise
infiltrate the operating system are hard at it, Microsoft is also releasing
patches in similar numbers for Windows XP as always.

"1 or 2 a week"
Since updates are not released weekly, only you know what you mean by this.
