Windows Update Problem

I originally had a problem with IE 6.0. When I last
attempted to download the latest updates from the Windows
Update site, it took forever. I aborted it, thinking it
was frozen. Long story short, I was never able to complete
it. My attempts to get the problem resolved through Dell
have been fruitless. They told me to uninstall IE6 and
downgrade back to 5.5, which I did, but that still won't
complete. I now have 5.5 installed and it SEEMS to be
working, but there are many little problems happening as a
result. I cannot even run the repair utility as IE no
longer appears in my list of installed programs. Attempts
to manually run the repair tool via the "run" command
result in the error message: "Version 5.50.4134.100 of
file pngfilt.dll exists, but the version needs to be
greater than 5.50.4807.2300". Any attempt to reinstall IE
version 5.5 or 6.0 from scratch just hangs at the end and
never completes. Dell tells me my only option is to backup
my files and reformat my hard drive, but I find that very
hard to believe. If anyone knows of any other solution,
I'd be SOOOOOO grateful. Thank you in advance.

And your Windows version is...?

How did you go about uninstalling IE6?

What happens if you visit Windows Update now? Please disable your
anti-virus application the entire time you're at Windows Update, whenever
you're downloading/installing from any MS page, or installing/uninstalling
anything.

Hi.

My version is Windows ME.

I uninstalled IE6 by going into Control Panel, Add/Remove
Programs, then selecting IE6 from the list. It prompted me
to restore back to the previous version (5.5), but froze
up towards the end.

When I attempt to visit it Windows Update now, it almost
immediately gives me the error: "Explorer has caused an
error in MSHTML.DLL. Explorer will now close", which it
does. I have to reboot at that point.

I always close and/or disable everything that's running
before attempting any installation or upgrade, but it
still bombs.

Thank you.

What version of MSHTML.DLL is your machine running now?

IE Help>About> what version is showing here (e.g., 5.50.1234.5678)?

IE Help>About>Update Versions> what is showing here?

Reformatting WinME (which may indeed be your best or only option) without
*fully* removing IE6 can be a big pain. You may want to take this to a
WinME-specific newsgroup. In the meantime lease see this KB article:

Someone much more knowledgable about WinME matters advises using IEradicator
(carefully, I'll add: RTFM) and reinstalling IE.

Are you running Norton System Quack - - errr - Doctor? If so, then read
on......

You may have up to 32,000 empty OEM*.INF files sitting in your
c:\Windows\INF folder, which prevents any program putting a legitimate *.INF
file in there (it also slow your system down to stop, trying to read them
and sort the [non-existent] contents!). You need to DELETE all 0byte (and
ONLY the 0byte) OEM*.INF files. Look here for information on how to do that,
and how to prevent it happening again (i.e. TURN OFF NORTON SYSTEM DOCTOR -
unless you are actively troubleshooting something):
