I need to get MS security patches. Launching Windows Update, going to Run
As, selecting Current User and OK, nothing happens. I am the only user and
thus do not have a password.

I know little about OE and don't know if it quotes automatically 'cause I
sure can't find anywhere to click to quote previous message. Therefore, am
copying and pasting.

Gee Whiz...OE failed me. My msg was sent to the Outbox while I did some
more searching...didn't intend to send yet.

Also went to MS site http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/ to try to
get the MS03-039 patch and after selecting Win XP and Go, got a "page can't
be found....check spelling, etc." That's what happened in IE.

Doing the same thing in Netscape, just got a blank page after clicking Go.

About the only thing I know is that I want the MS03-039 patch.

Help please.

Ann, what if you just click on it, without doing Run As? Is the behavior
the same?

Kelli, I have been AFK for a while...thanks for your response. If I just
Open it, get the same window giving me the same options as I stated
previously. On the Windows Update page
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp all the options in the
left column are faded out and inaccessible.

I am trying to get the 03-039 security patch.

Not being an experienced OE user, I did not know how to"quote" previous
postings and reverted to copy and paste. Would like to know how to quote
and also find out if this group does bottom or top posting.

Many thanks for any help.

If you just hit "Reply Group" while the post you're replying to is selected,
that should automatically quote it.

I'm not really sure which is the prefered way, but I personally like to put
my replies at the top so they are easy to see/find.

When you first open Windows Update, a number of those options should be
faded out. Does the pane on the right say "Welcome to Windows Update"? Do
you have the scan for updates link?

Kelli, let me see if I can put this in a nutshell. When I open Windows
Update, I get a small window asking if I want to log on as Current User or
Other User. Selecting Current User and clicking OK
takes me to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp which is
labeled "Administrators Only."

This tells me: To run as the local administrator in Windows XP or Windows
Server 2003:

1.. Click Start, and then click All Programs (or right-click Windows
Update if it is available).
2.. Right-click Windows Update.
3.. Click Run as on the menu that appears.
4.. Do one of the following:
a.. Enter the password for the administrator.
b.. Enter the user name, domain name, and password of a different user
account that has administrative permissions on this computer.
Possibly my problem is that I never set a password ANYWHERE.

No matter what I do, I never get a window that says "Welcome to Windows
Update"...only that Administrators Only window. Everything in the left
pane is faded out.

Re: Link for "scan for updates"...I do not have that particular link.
Somewhere on a Windows page there was a Windows Update, which I clicked and
it took me to the same old form that wanted me to sign on as Current User or
Other User.

The strangest thing about this is that I have previously gotten updates and
have never before had to sign in as Current or Other user.

If the scan for updates link may help me, will you please send it?
Thanks...

Now I'm replying to my own mail! Subsequently, I've taken a couple of
different approaches.

Went to Troubleshooting, located my problem, backed up the Registry and
edited as directed.
Went to Registry back-up and replaced it.

That didn't help.

Next, I gave myself a Windows password, re-booted, used it to enter Windows.
Went to Windows Update, signed on as Other User, used my user name and
password. Got a little window telling me

C:WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WUPDMGR.EXE
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it
has no enabled devices associated with it.

Any suggestions for this one? My Windows XP is the Home Edition that came
with my pc.

Ah, okay, I gotcha now. So, you aren't running as an administrator, which
is what you need to do to install updates. Have you tried simply entering
"Owner" as the user, and not entering a password for it?

I don't think the link will help you - what I suspect is that your account
doesn't have the privlages to install.

Try this:
1) Go Start - Control Panel - User Accounts
2) Post the list of users that appear there, and what kind of account they
have (it should be listed under the account) and if it says that they are
"Password Protected" or not.

I highly suspect this is a user permissions issue, although it's odd that
you were able to do it at one point but not now. Let's check and see what
your account is listed as, and go from there.
