windows update not working

Please can somene help. Windows update does not work, nor can I reply to
email using Hotmail. I installed Spybot and Adaware a while ago should this
have anything to do with it. When I use, for example, the Windows update
screen it says "Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update
software" and nothing else - though at the bottom it says: Done (with a
warning symbol). Double clicking on this, further details say: line37,
char2, permission denied.
No MS updates, nor deleting spybot has resolved this. I've tried resetting
the security settings but to no avail. any ideas? Your help is greatly
appreciated.

Windows Update Fails:
Disable your anti-virus when obtaining the updates.
Make sure that your firewall is allowing the connection to Windows Update .
This would be on ports 80 and 443.
