Windows update not updating

In the last few days Windows Update has found 6 critical updates for me.
I click Install and it installs and I let it reboot my machine. When I
come back in, however, I find that they haven't been installed at all.
I don't get any error message, but the blue update icon is once again in
my task tray, telling me 'Updates are ready for your computer. Click
here to install these updates' which is it told me before. I've tried
this several times, letting it go through the installation and reboot,
each time with the same result.

I've done many updates in the past and this is the first time this has
happnened. Any idea what might be going on? Thanks.
