Windows Update major problem!

Just been looking at a Xp Home PC - SP2 installed that had been
infected with various sypware/malware. Got rid of it all and also
cleaned the registry with Registry Mechanic. All looks fine now and
AVG reports no viruses. Thought I'd do a Windows Update to see if it
needed anything. Update fails due to a pop up message saying that
security settings won't allow activeX to run? Checked the help etc and
set all as recommended but it still won't allow it!

Any ideas please? Normal web browing is fine.

TIA

cheers,

Run IE and click on Tools | Internet Options |Security tab.
Make sure the Internet Zone is selected.
Click the Default Level button.
If that doesn't work, then repeat the steps above, except
Click the Custom Level button instead and check your settings for ActiveX
controls.

After you're done, get Spybot Search & Destroy and active it's IE helper,
and
run it's Immunize IE option to return your security settings to thier nice
"Paranoid But Safe" settings :)

If you want to do it an easier way ........ then just run Windows Auto
Update applet
Start | Control Panel | Automatic Updates
Select the 3rd option "Notify me but don't automatically download or install
them"
this way auto update will do the check you want to do, then let you choose
which to go for.

Click the Trusted sites icon.
Click the Sites button.
Clear the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone
check box.
Use the Add button next to the Add this Web site to the zone box to add the
following sites:

Tried all suggestions but couldn't fix it. Decided on a re-install.
All fine and I can now download updates but only to a certain point! I
downloaded all that was offered and rebooted. Now when I try update
again, it goes through fine until the Express or Custom page but no
matter which I try, I get a message saying that --

The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you
are trying to view

Any ideas now please?

TIA

cheers,
Len
