I just installed the Update for KB826942 to my XP Home,
and this actually made it IMPOSSIBLE for me to connect to
my Netgear wireless router! I've uninstalled the update
and am back to being connected. Any idea what's up?

Not really, but you may be able to remove the update using add/remove
programs of system restore.

It's something to do with WEP, and whether your hardware
supports it. I believe there are other posts about this
update if you do a search. There was talk of being able
to update your hardware to be compatible with it, and not
installing this update if your hardward can't cope. All
a bit silly really if you ask me....

You didn't say exactly which Netgear router you had - it that could make a difference. If it's available as an option, you might try disabling 802.1x authentication in the router's security configuration.

Actually it's hotfix 826942, and it seems to require hardware that's WPA
capable. So if you have that hotfix installed, upgrade your hardware to
the latest firmware. If your hardware is old (like my SMC router and
Belkin wireless card) then it's better to uninstall the hotfix. Though
I've seen recent posts talk about disabling the 802.1x option and typing
in the key...I should try that and see if I can make it work with the
hotfix in place...that would be good since the hotfix actually fixes some
security issues among other things
