Windows Update killed my Network Connectivity

after installing a bunch of windows xp updates i can't
connect to the network anymore after rebooting. tried
system restore. no go. tried resetting tcp/ip stack. no
go. any other solutions without repair reinstall?

I am having the same EXACT problem and posted in "Windowsxp.general" the
following message:

When I plug the CAT 5 Cable into my computer to connect
to the internet windows pops up the "Local Area
Connection is not Connected" baloon verifying that the
computer is now connected to the internet. The only
problem is that the computer will nopt grab an IP
address. No matter what I try. I have re-installed the
network card, double-checked all network adapter
configurations. Etc.. etc.. Nothing works.

When I check the status it says that O packets have been
sent and 0 packets have been recieved. Which verifies
the fact that my computer isn't even requesting an IP
address. What do I do?

BTW: Even doing the "Ipconfig /release" and
then "Ipconfig /Renew" Fails to grab an IP.

Thanks in Advance!

Also, I just did some testing on the computer and...

If I install WinPCap and Ethereal and tell Ethereal to capture data off the
network it can see the network and capure data, And the windows' "Local Area
Connection Status" box will start counting the packets (Ex. Before starting
Ethereal it shows 0 recieved and 0 sent. Then after starting ethereal it
shows 0 sent and 1,673 recieved. With the counts steadily moving up as more
packets are captured.) But the second I tell Ethereal to stop the Counter
stops going up.

Is a service or something else refusing to work? I checked the Event Log
and it shows a Warning that my computer has auto configured to use the IP
address "169.254.125.117" (The IP it should be getting from DHCP is
192.168.0.101.)

Thought this may be useful to support teams.

I know I am posting a lot of add-ons but i feel this information may be
useful...

I do not believe that this is just associated with windows update. I think
it is kinda a sparatic "Surprise I dont want to work" thing... I have had
this issue 5 times previously with each time I had to re-install windows and
the problem was fixed. Hopefully no one has to re-install windows this
time.

To others with this problem,

Please leave information listing what network adapter you have and what
version of windows you have along with the brand and model of your PC. Try
to also find out when you last ran windows update. Ex:

NIC: Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Eithernet NIC
OS Version: Windows XP SP1
Last Update: 3 days ago (1/17/04)
Brand: HP
Model: ZT1170

What error does "ipconfig /renew" give you?

Running any firewalls, virus scanners?

The error message that it gives me reads as follows:
"
Windows IP Configuration

An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to
contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out."

I would also like to note that the count of packets sent is still at 0 after
this is done running. Packet capture picks up no packets being sent, and
the router/cable modem ARE working correctly because my dektop computer is
still able to connect using the same means. (Desktop is running Windows ME
with all of the current updates.)

Windows XP issue only?

Also, I have tried running the Msconfig utility and selectinvely disabling
and enablign services and rebooting. Also did that to startup items, with
nothing working. I also just re-installed the drivers with a fresh download
from realtek (www.realtek.com.tw)

Forgot to include info about my virus scanner and firewall..

I am running McAfee VirusScan Enterprise Version 7.0.0
Definitions 4314
Created on January 14 2004
Scan Engine 4.2.60
No Extra DAT.

Firewall:
Black Ice Defender also known as BlackICE PC Protection

Version 3.6.cbz

All of these are at their most current version (Except the DATS on Mcafee
arn't up to date due to being unable to connect to internet to download
them. Updating via download onto Zip 250 disk at the moment.)

and no, disableing/enabling them or uninstalling them has NO effect on the
problem.

This thing usually ends up being a broken firewall/virus scanner/similar
config.

Also possible that your NIC or cable is bad.

Heh.. fixed it...

I remembered that I had sent my computer in for some other diagnostics
awhile back and wondered if they maybe installed something they shouldn't
have...

and they did..
They installed sygate personal firewall, and for some reason one of its
files was causing a MAJOR problem. I un-installed it and it restored the
old version of the file and the problem was fixed. I can now connect to the
internet just fine. I'll check out what files it replaces sometime that way
we know for future reference...

Thanks for the help... but maybe the others still need help.

No, it IS a Windows update. I had installed 3 updates and one that I installed screwed up my network connectivity. I could not ping anywhere

I reformatted and did not install the certain update and I've had no problems so far.

It's got to be the update that is killing peoples connectivity.
