Windows update is asking me to update to microsoft .net framework 2.0- do i really need this?

In yesterday's security updates there was indeed another .NET 2.0 patch.
Just a routine update. Allow it to install and all will be well. Nothing
about which you should be alarmed.

..Net Framework is not critical or essential unless you have a program that
needs it.
But one you have it installed, you should install all applicable Critical
Updates for it.

In the future you should ask such questions in the windows Update newsgroup.
The people here are smart, but their area of expertise is Windows Defender
and not always Windows Update.

In another thread I argued that Defender *MAY* indeed be related to certain
update errors (and commented on Microsoft's "solution" to the problem).

Prior issues on the same system that were directly related to Defender
included a quirk that required the removal and reinstallation of .NET 2.0.
