Hi,

Can someone explain why, when I do a windows up date it installs a version
of a driver that is known to be bad?

The NIC in question is "INTEL PRO/100+ Management Adapter" - it installs the
version of the driver that is known to have problems
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=834481

This has been a serious issue for us as a company - can anyone point me in
the right direction to learn the finer points of locking down windows update
from installing drivers?

Thanks,

I absolutely hate the driver updates that Windows Update provides, they
never seem to work, especially in the case of this particular Intel NIC
driver. I never load any drivers from WU, but I haven't found a reliable
way to prevent users from doing so either (without blocking them from the
entire WU site that is.)

Download and install SUS (Software Update Services). This centralizes the
"updating" on one server and all the clients' Windows Update looks to it
instead of the Internet. It will only supply the updates to the users that
you "approve".

Thanks Phillip, I'll look into that. Looks like the right solution.

Just do not install any drivers from WU.
WU doesn't install neither driver updates nor Windows recommended updates
without the user intervention. Running WU needs Admin rights. SUS 1.0 offers
W2k, XP, and 2k3 critical updates only. Unlike SUS 1.0, Windows Update
Services has the ability to deliver updates for all Microsoft products. When
initially released, WUS will support updating various versions of Windows,
Office, Exchange, SQL Server and MSDE. Support for updating other Microsoft
software will be enabled on an on-going basis without requiring an upgrade
or re-deployment of existing Windows Update Services implementations. will
support additional update types (critical driver updates, non-critical
updates, etc.).
Microsoft will launch an Open Evaluation Program later this year for Windows
Update Services.
