Windows update installation failure

I use winXP Pro SP2 disc. Legit copy. Will no longer accept updates, though
managed to put in SP3. Still won't update after that. took out SP3 and no
better. Put it in again...it did accept that but still wont update anything
else.

Also keeps finding two printers that I cant install as I dont know what they
can be. Have two printers in already. However at each boot up discovers two
new printers. So I have to cancel them each boot time. A bit annoying but not
overtaxing. I did try removing all the installed printers. Had no effect.

Have also twice done a windows repair using the xp-pr sp2 disc. No
improvement.

Have a third problem that I will air here. In order to try to avoid losing
everything, I have installed a new OS using the win xp sp2 disc on another
partition, having reformated that partition. No problem doioing that. I have
a router/modem in one unit. Netgear DG834v3 as a home network (hardwire). On
this partition whilst I can see that I am connected to the net, the icon
tells me 16Mbs ,or so, the machine refuses to conect in ANY other way at all
to the outside world although I can see the other computers in the intranet
i.e. here at home. No firewalls are installed on that partition. You can see
that I am connected using this original partition. Could any one help?

Anybody got the knowledge to help an old "buffer" sort out these probs? I
would be most grateful, my wife tells me I spend far too much time on the
computer trying to solve problems.

You must have 'managed to put in SP3' by manually downloading the entire
package, correct ?

To get the updates installed you need to do Method 1, register
wups2.dll from a Command Prompt *exactly* as it's laid out in the MSKB
article.

In order to avoid 'losing everything', suggest you purchase an external
Hard Drive and back up all your data to it.
Then reformat and reinstall XP as that will be the fastest route to
resolve the issues you cite.
After doing that, download and save the AU Client and WindowsUpdate
Reset Tool (v77e) before doing anything else:

After the download completes, close all open browsers and programs.
Now run au_client_tool_v77e_codeplex.exe, restart if prompted to.
The tool will download and install the latest Version of the Windows
Update Agent [WUA]. This version of the WUA is supposed to resolve the
wups2.dll registration issue. Also it scans the system faster when
checking for needed updates.

Now apply XP SP3, install the antivirus, install the printers'
softwares, and you're set. <w>

Thanks for your prompt reply. Yes I did download sp3, though I am unsure what
you mean by manually. I did ask for the "non-express" method and chose sp3.
I will in a few days when I have more time follow your advice. I was hoping
to avoid all that. It was for that reason that I was usung a new partition to
try and install a new OS. That in effect would bee the same. But then I hit
the third snag. Unable on tha partition to get int explorer or anything elso
to see the outside world even though it can tell me that I am connected to
the web and my download speed is 16 MBPS. It wont even let me activate
windows. What I did not tell you was that the back up mechanism would not
work either!!! It never rains but it pours! I took a chance in applying sp3
without a back up in the (vain) hope that installation of that sp3 would
perhaps cure me of some of my problems. Will feed back some news when I have
some but going away for a few days and the comp can go to sleep.
