Windows Update inaccessible

Every Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) link I click, from
my usual listed link, from the Address bar, and from every MS page I could
find lead me to the same title-less, MS-looking page full of diverse
non-working links to MS info sites. When I click Windows Update in
Start>Help and Support I get a Red X box message "Cannot display the page",
"The page you are trying to view cannot be displayed because the server it
resides on does not respond. Please try again later." I virus-checked with
Norton. No virus. Anybody can explain why my computer refuses to display
Windows Update? I have the disquieting feeling that I've picked up a nasty
..exe that redirects all requests for that MS page. And disguises the
outgoing/receiving URL because I do read the proper URL in the Address bar!
Is that possible? HELP! PLEASE.

Jay Cee, I had and still have the same problem. I have had some help about
it but help was never completed.

Copying and pasting from one post of Re: Windows Update problem:

On the Windows Update page
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp all the options in the
left column are faded out and inaccessible

Following instructions on that page, I found that no one had been designated
administrator and there was no password. That was corrected, administrator
and password set up.

Then, after entering my administrator user name and password, got the
following downer:

C:WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WUPDMGR.EXE
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it
has no enabled devices associated with it.

This last bit of info was posted on Sept. 22 at 7:53 pm (my time EDT).
Kelli had been helping me but maybe she didn't see the post or was
overwhelmed by all my verbiage!

I will watch your thread to see if you (and maybe I) get help.

I have a similiar problem. The update page lets me search
for updates and then stops dead with an error page and
double word problem number. I am missing out on key
security updates.

My friend had the same problem and re-installed his copy
of XP and the windows update page now works fine for him.
Please don't tell me I have to re-install to get the
windows update page to work again!

Ann! Greetings! Thanks for your posting. I clicked the
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp you gave below and got
the update page immediately. And working! My problem is thus solved but the
mystery remains. Why am I unable to get the update page through
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com ? It doesn't matter from where I click a
link to that site all I get is that same dead-links useless MS page. Even
Google, if I type that address in the Search box and select I'm Feeling
Lucky, will take me there! I have used that link to update XP ever since I
got my computer two years ago and last updated using it on 15SEP03. I can
only guess that these last updates coded that link in the server for my
computer not to access. Bizarre, no? Anyway, from now on I'll use the "v4"
link.
