C. Sams

I am working on a friends PC. Here are the problems he is
having.

1. When you run windows update. You scan for updates and
this is what you get "windows update has encountered an
error and cannot display the requested page. I have tried
a few things with no success.

2. When we try to enable the xp firewall this is the
error we get "an error occurred while internet connection
sharing was being enabled. The dependency service or
group failed to start"

Thanks in advance

1. Have a look at the windows update troubleshooter, you're error is listed
there:

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

2. Internet Connection sharing needs the following services to running

Application Layer Gateway Service
Network Connections Service
Network Location Awareness Service
Remote Access Connection Manager Service

Check they are all running

start/run
services.msc

Paul

Make sure you are logged in as administrator, or with a username with
administrator privileges.

Application layer gateway should be set to manual, so xp should start it, if
it needs it.
Check its set to manual, and try and start it, and see if you get an error.
It should start ok, as it is not dependant on any other service.

Remote access connection manager should also be set to manual, and xp should
start as necessary, however this service needs the telephony service to be
running.

Telephony should also be set to manual, and started by xp if needed,
telephony needs the Plug and Play service and the remote procedure call
service.

Plug and Play(Not Universal plug and play) should be set to start
automatically as should rpc (not the rpc locator service, that should be
manual)

Have you been changing setting in the services ?

Paul

It is a friends PC so whether he has been changing
settings in the service or not I don't know. I would say
no because he is slightly PC illiterate.

I was able to start the application layer gateway. But
not the Remote access connection manager. It says "could
not start the remote access connection manager service on
local computer. error 5: access denied.

And I still can't enable the firewall.

Any ideas on my windows update problem also?

I was just rereading. I had already found that link you
gave me for the windows update trouble shoot. It sounded
difficult. The registry scares me. I was hoping to find
and easier fix. I may get brave and try it.

I did it!! And it solved my windows update problem. One
problem down one to go. And once I read the link
thoroughly it was different than the one I had found and
it was much easier.

Did you start from the top down.

Plug and play and rpc need to be set to automatic, and be running first.

Then start the telephony service, and only when that is running start RAS.

Access denied is a bit odd if your logged in as administrator, it may be
getting close to first trying an

sfc /scannow

to locate and repair damaged system files,
and failing that a repair install.

Well there you go,

when I taking exams at school, I always used to get it for not answering the
question on the paper.

What change did you make to the registry, I'm just wondering if these
services issues are due to a corrupt registry.

Does the pc have a history of any hardware problems, chkdisk running
automatically at bootup for instance.
Are there any hardware problems reported in the system event log.
When exactly did these problems start happening, can it be traced back to
any particular incident, crash, software instlall or update.
Does the system always get shutdown properly, or is it just powered off ?

I followed the instructions in the link you gave me
(http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/). It
said to change the values to 0 so I did (his was at 100)
and it worked. I wondered what this was for. I checked my
machine and it was also at 100. It has no hardware issues
that I am aware of. How do I check the system event log?

He can sort of trace it back to an update. He thinks he
pushed an incorrect key and had problems. Then he did a
system restore. I told him that there is a service pack 1
update and asked what he needed backed up. That refreshed
his memory and he suspects that is the update he did not
complete. Why does that update need to be backed up for?

His machine is always shut down properly.

Hope I covered everything.

My problems are solved. I installed the service pack 1
express update and a few other updates that were
available for his computer and now the firewall works. I
suspect it was the SP1 update that corrected the problem.

I thank you so much for all your help. You people are
lifesavers.
