Running Windows Update on my Windows 2000 system, it successfully
installs all available critical updates except this one:

Security Update for DirectX 9.0 for Windows 2000 (KB904706)

When installing this one, at about half-way through (according to the
progress bar) my system hangs. Task Manager says that 100% of CPU is
being consumed, about 80% by SynTPEnh.exe and about 20% by CPRSS.exe.

It can stay in this state for hours with no further progress.

I found one relevant web page: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909596
but this page addresses the situation where the installation apparently
completes normally. Mine doesn't complete at all.

Any more ideas?

I tried manually installing Windows2000-KB904706-DX9-x86-ENU.exe but
got the same hang. The "details" box of the installer said "Running
processes before install" at the time of the hang.

Google told me that SynTPEnh is Synaptics Touchpad Enhanced.
So I killed that task and the installer completed rapidly.

Rebooting the machine restarted SynTPEnh and all is well.
