Windows Update goes into wierd loop...

This is wierd! Everything else on the computer seems to be working fine, but when I go to Windows Update I get
stuck in a fast cycle where the status bar shows windowsupdate.microsoft.com and v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com alternating several times per second. When I press Escape and try to go back several web pages, I find that it is filled with Windows Update. If I am fast enough going back and hitting Escape, I can get back to a previous non-Windows Update
page
The problem was happening under Service Pack 3, so I thought that I could fix the problem by upgrading to Service Pack 4 which I downloaded. Everything is still wierd! I browsed the Windows Registry for Windows Update related keys, but found nothing that seemed obviously out of place
Any ideas?

It's possible that you have some corruption. I would start by removing all
components of the Windows Update ActiveX control
1. Rename all instances of IUCTL.DLL and IUENGINE.DLL
2. Rename the entire C:\Program Files\Windows Update\V4 folder
3. Delete the "Update Class" ActiveX control in C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded
Program Files
3. Revisit the Windows Update Site
(Delete the above files/folder if all goes well)
