I have Windows 2000 and haven't installed any updates for
a good while (OK, so I'm a bad person)....last night I
decided to download/install all available updates...about
10.5MB of them. It started around 8:00 p.m., it is now
2:00 p.m. the next day and my computer is STILL doing
something. The download says it's 100% complete but the
install hasn't started. I have a dial-up, and KNOW that
it's slow, but I never thought it would be this slow. Is
there something wrong? Should I abort? And if I do, can
I go back to just start the "install" process and not do
the download portion again?

Hi Paula

If Windows Update hangs for such a long time you should abort it, yes. When
you abort you will most likely have to download the Fixes again...

My suggestion is anyway that you download the MS Windows 2000 Service Pack
4.

As you are Dial-Up I would recommend you download the Express Installation.
To do this go here:

http://www.microsoft.com/Windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp4/download.asp

Please be sure to choose to download the "SP4 Express Installation".

Direct Download Link:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/B/1/A/B1A2A4DF-CC8E-454B-AD9F-378143D77AEB/SP4Express_EN.exe
(<600 KB)

In order to do the Express Install you will need to be connected to the
Internet during Install. Depending on the Files that you need to update this
may take several hours.

Once you have downloaded the Express Install, open the downloaded File and
follow the Instructions thet the Setup Wizard is giving you.

NOTE: Always backup your system *before* installing and please choose to
archive the files during Setup as this will allow you to roll back the SP
Installation in the unlikely case that problems would occur.

Alternatively, you can also Download the Network Installation which will not
need an Internet Connection during Install. It is quite huge though. (~130
MB)

If you don't want to download anything then you can order SP4 on CD.
Shipping+Handling costs apply. To order go here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp4/ordercd.asp.

or:
Order the CD by Phone or Fax
Call (800) 360-7561
Fax (716) 447-7330

a.. Request part number C11-03228 for SP4 English
b.. Request part number C11-03229 for SP4 French

If you want to download the Network Installation go here:

Go here to download it:

Using a Download Manager will allow you to interrupt/resume when you like.
You can even shut down your PC and then go back to downloading whenever you
like.

Get a free Download Manager here:

Some Shareware Download Managers are:

FlashGet: http://www.flashget.com/

and many more...

After you have applied SP4 please visit Windows Update to get the latest
Security Updates which do protect you from the MS Blaster Worm (in case you
don't have it installed already) and which update Internet Explorer.

To learn everything about the MS Blaster Worm and how to protect yourself
best, go to: http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.asp

Hope this helps. Regards,
