Windows Update files deleted

I have a laptop for my occasional travels and as an emergency back up for my
regular desktop model at home. I use WindowsXp Home on both. Both are
relatively new Acers and came with pre-installed WindowsXP Home.

When at home I run the laptop briefly on a weekend at fortnightly intervals
to keep it updated, charged and synchronised with my main data files.

Until Christmas the laptop was performing faultlessly and accessing Windows
Updates successfully when run. My desktop computer continues to update
without difficulty. Both have downloaded IE7 and use IE7. A special MS fix
(KB904942-v2-x86-ENU) was required for IE7 to access my old Hotmail account
(this worked on the desktop, but not on the laptop).

Just before Christmas the laptop had problems updating an offered update (on
a viewer as I recollect - it reported the attempted update had failed) and
since then when I try to go to Windows Update on the laptop I am taken to a
screen where I am advised the files used for updating have been deleted from
the computer and I am invited to click continue to register and download the
needed updating files. When I do so the screen goes through a routine of
counting the percentage for Registration and then for Downloading, but,
having apparently completed this process, instead of taking me to the update
page I am taken back to the page advising the files are deleted and offering
again registration and downloading. I have now gone though this circuit
several times with the same fruitless results on 3 - 4 weekly/fortnightly
attempts.

Did the pre-Christmas failed update cause this laptop problem, is it related
to IE7 and is there a fix I can apply as I would wish to keep the laptop
ready for travel or emergency use?

Some have reported that simply re-registering the MSXML3.DLL seems to fix the problem.
1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type: regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL
Press okay

If that hasn't helped you may need to re-registered some more files:

1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type (pressing okay after each one) :-

net stop wuauserv

Repeat for the following:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

net start wuauserv

Thanks for the advice and instructions. I will try these when I next get the
laptop out - hopefully later today. I will report the outcome when known.

I re-registered MSXML3.DLL as advised and was immediately then able to
update. Of 9 updates only one failed KB923789 (for Adobe Macromedia Flash
Player), which was, I believe, the one which failed to update just before
Christmas. I tried this one again, and again it failed with the error code
of 0x643 showing in the download history page. Then AutoUpdate reported the
same update was ready for installation, but again installation failed. I
updated the flash player from the Adobe site and tried KB923789 again with
the same failed installation. Is this failure with the one update
significant and worth chasing further?

Again many thanks for re-enabling my windows updates!

or easy link: http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_19166

Remove WU downloads from the temporary folder:-

Stop the Automatic Updates service

Click Start, Choose Run.
