windows update file

hi, running a dell 4100, 512 ram 9g used 28g free space.
When checking windows update I noticed that one update it said I should have
was
KB837009. Well it looked kind of familiar and I checked installation history
and found it had been sucessfully downloaded about 10 times. So I hunt it up
on a file search and double click it and it says IE SP1 has to be installed
first. I go to add/remove and IE SP1 is there. Now I figure I'll go to
Microsoft and re-download SP1 in case it's corrupted. I saved it to a folder
and when I tried to run it I got the message my IE SP1 is up to date. Belarc
doesn't show KB837009 either. I have IE Sp1 6.0.2800.1106 but this KB837009
says 6.0.2800.1168. I looked it up in C: but found nothing except the
original file name is Wextract. I can also find it doing a file search under
Q837009. Time for a new puter or a new user, don't know which.
Thanks
Kelly

Forget it, you aren't the only one to suffer from Microsoft's crap
programming.

Check in Add/Remove Programs for any other cumulative patches to OE.
You may have to remove them first.

One example of a related problem is described here but unfortunately
does not refer to the 837009 patch:

<title>A dialog box with no text appears if you reply to a news message in Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1</title>
http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=555398

FYI 837009 is superseded by 823353 even though it is a lower number.
Unfortunately also 837009 is listed as a critical security update but 823353
is not. Etc.

A similar cmd window workaround for is available for 837009
if the more conventional uninstall procedures aren't available
or don't work.

A Google Groups search which refers to these updates
and their KB article aliases should prove informative:

http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/msg/ca9a09f5f8396b29

(Google Groups search for
(KB837009 837009 KB823353 823353)
- sorted by date
)
