windows update failure

when trying to install a seciruty update for windows xp
(KB840374) apears a massage "the following item failed to
install. try to install it again. seciruty update for
windows xp (kb840374)"

Download the KB840374 update manually (RTFM)
and open a DOS Prompt and type this as shown (yours may be different but the outline is the same).

<name of hotfix file>.exe /z /q

hopefully your problem will be solved :)
