I have successfully connected to Windows Update many
times.

I installed some software to "hide personal info while
surfing". I stared getting this message:

--------------------------------------
Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that
helps you get the most out of your computer.

You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system
in order to use Windows Update.
----------------------------------------

I uninstalled the privacy software and still get this
message. Microsoft only has an "improper IE version"
message in the knowledge base, and that is not helpful
for this.

Does anyone know what UPDATE checks to verify the OS? I
would like to use WINDOWS UPDATE again.

Thanks,
lpmorgan

Your privacy software uninstaller left behind the data it deposited in the
registry. You need to open the registry and search for the application by
name or by vendor, and delete all references to the security package.
