[Error number: 0x80072EFF]

The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you
are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the
problem...

Is anyone else getting this message when they try to update their
Win2000 Pro?

I have tried several options. I got through once the other day by
Opening a Cmd Window
Running net stop wuauserv
Running net start wuauserv
Closing the Cmd Window

But today the update is again giving me the Error number: 0x80072EFF

Help would be appreciated.

Alan

Have you installed the SP4 security rollup patch? It seems to have caused
that on the one Win2KPro machine we installed it on. I've seen other
reports of the same.

Many people are removing it. MS is going to re-issue it at some point in
time.

Tom
| Tom,
|
| As a matter of fact, yes.
|
| Any idea as to fix?

Tom,

It had no effect. Well I shouldn't really say that, as now I get a
different error.

How frustrating!

Alan

I have had the same problems and then some. I cannot even get on to the
Windows Update OR Microsoft Update sites....they freeze. Went thru
exhaustive diagnostics and fix attempts including what you have done....to
no avail. Microsoft support guy was great but unfortunately still no go. He
suggested I had some corrupt system files. I'm thinking of doing a reformat
and clean install.

0x80072EFF

I assume the following:

BITS, wauserv and Eventlog are running AND they are all set on automatic start. They are windows services, and they can be controlled through issuing the following command:

services.msc

Now, what it worked for me:

Turn off (exit from) all utilities and services which redirect ports, change proxies, provide anonymous web surfing, cloak your identity or IP and so on. Then, Microsoft Update works like a charm.

More specifically, I was using newssearcher 0.9.2. This is an app which redirects some ports for using NewsLeecher SuperSearch. It is programmed in/uses/requires .NET Framework 2.0. So, I ended this app, and then Windows Update worked for me.

So, my two cents are: some util redirects some ports on your computer, changes proxy options, hides your IP, redirects web traffic or so, this is the cause of the problem you are having with Windows Update.

Please note that it is not illegal to use such apps in the Netherlands and it is absolutely no crime to mention it on the internet. I think the same is true in France and Italy.
