As it says above. There is no update, all I get is an error msg

"Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service
is not running. You may need to restart your computer."

needless to say, restarting makes no difference.

The update history is completely blank and in the meantime I cannot
update anything including security essentials and the clock, most of
the sites I try to assess tell me the certification is out of date and
I can't send any mail.

Running V home premium 32 on a laptop which, to date, has been no
trouble at all. The only thing I've done recently is take it apart to
defluff the fans, and everything else is running fine. I have
problems with IE and Firefox.

Help!

Download the free version and run it. Looks like you have a bug or two.

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
if you wish.

Download and run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

Reboot.

Then follow the instructions here:

How do I reset Windows Update components?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Reboot.

Try again.

Microsoft had an issue, I think to do with a bad DNS address. It should
be cleared up by now.

That sounds plausible to me, but where's the feedback?

Harry.
