I ran Windows Update on 3 machines from the Microsoft site and installed the
following patches:
KB902344, KB886903, KB904942, KB909993, KB909520, KB891122, and KB896344.
Two of the machines had Video driver updates which I installed, the last one
did not. After the reboot the display was stuck at 8 bit and 600X366 with no
option to go to the advanced tab. The weird thing was the note above the
settings for the display resolution. It said generic monitor on blank. It was
like it didn't have a video card but looking at device manager the card is
installed and working properly.

Things I have tried:
Rolling back the driver
uninstalling the device and rebooting
downloading the video driver from Dells site
Uninstalling the monitors and video cards
I planned to try uninstalling the patches but only 2 were listed an only 1
was removable

Looking for help!!!
These are Dell Optiplex GX 240's. One has an additional Radion 7000 video card

Did you actually intstall it, or just download it?

Yes I ran the installer. It was an ATI driver installer. It said there was a
version installed that had to be uninstalled before i could install the one I
launched. It asked which driver to uninstall, I selected the correct Video
card and it required a reboot. It said it would start the installation when I
logged back in.

Thanks for the response.

Give it one more go. Don't uninstall. If ith deosn't work, me may have
to get the driver direct from ATI.

I think, also that some of ATI's drivers require the Dot Net framework
to be installed first. Sorry I can't tell you which version, since I
don't know which exact card you got.

Since I used Windows Update to complete the updates I would have assumed they
would install the patches in the right order. Maybe not though.

Dot net framework is an optional update. Drivers via MS update are a
crapsshoot.

ANyway, did you rerun the installer?

I fixed the problem. I went into safe mode, removed the video adapter and
rebooted. It fixed it right up.

You should *never* update drivers from winupdate.
Use only drivers from hw manu sites, even then it is only neccessary to
update if they provide extra funcionality or cure a bug
