Hi,

I think there was a recent update that required the computer to be rebooted,
after the update was installed, there was no prompt to reboot however. This
caused the CD-Roms to stop reading data from disks, you would put the
cd/dvd in and XP would report the drive as 0/0 bytes (used/free).

In most cases, a reboot fixed this. But it seems to be persisting in some
computers.

Does anyone know what might cause this and or which update caused this.

thanks in advance.

Hi Nick
You may do better in the update group rather than here.
I am sure your problem or similar, has been posted in the group. If you
have autoupdate set to download and install, would suggest you adjust to
pick a time when you want them downloaded - and always reboot whether
prompted or not.
I think it was KB924191 for which a fix was issued a couple of days later
i.e. KB925672.
I cannot think of any other KB's that failed to prompt for a reboot. But
see for yourself.
This is a brief description of what happened ;-

"The problems that most people
encountered when the update went live were because Windows Update/Microsoft
Update was not properly seeing the patch was successful and a reboot was
requested. The update was installed for these cases. The update has been
fixed to properly detect when patch is successful and a reboot is required."
