Hi,
Simple questions here...
Will windows update distribute the framework 2.0 automatically to end users?

Thanks,
Bryan ZM

Probably...
But even so: the .NET framework 1.1 was an *optional* install.
I'll bet it will be the same of the framework 2.0.
Safer to have the installer test for it.

But in a domain environment it is good to know because with WSUS you can make
computers install it in your domain. So the sooner it is released on Windows
Update the better.

I asked the same question and got a reply from Microsoft, telling that it
will be same as for .NET Framework 1.1: Windows Update will not
automatically install .NET Framework 2.0. However if you have installed it,
fixes will be applied automatically.

With WSUS in a domain environment you assign windows updates (including
optional ones such as the .net framework) to groups to be detected or
installed automatically. This isn't the Windows Update website but a service
that runs on your server to manage updates in a domain. You can force
optional updates to be installed on computers.

If you extract the files, you can use the GPO managed software installation
to install the framework. The only caveat is that if you don't have Windows
Installer 3.0 or later, the GPO installation will fail with misleading
errors.
