I have windows 98 second edition, and have recently
upgraded to windows xp. After installation I could not
activate by use of the internet. I can access the
internet through internet explorer, but cannot activate
by the internet? Also, when I try to use windows update
it goes to the web site and when I click "scan your
computer" it goes from 0% to 100% in a split second and
then returns a windows update error (0x800A138F)? I
bought the software at Walmart about a year ago and had
installed it on my laptop ( worked fine on it ), but I
sold it and built a desktop and now it will not work?
I have reformatted c: and reinstalled windows 98 and
windows xp upgrade and it still does the same thing! Any
help would be appreciated.

Jay;
Try #10 and #9 .

Trying to run the activate and have it dial up can be very troublesome.
Get on the net *first* then go to
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows
and take the 'activate on the internet now' (there is no need to do the
registration side). SHould take under 30 seconds
