My XP home is set to automatically download updates. Win update 819696 first
downloaded in mid July. I have had the same auto download about 9 times
since then. The install seems to work - I get no error messages. I have also
tried something I read on a newsgroup recently about renaming the catroot2
folder - this didn't work, still getting the download :)

How do I check to make sure the update has in fact downloaded properly, and
what can I do to stop further downloads of the same update? Your help on
this is appreciated.

Hi Lee,

Check the windowsupdate.log file for any errors in downloading and
installing that update. If there is one, try this: disable autoupdating
(control panel/system/autoupdate tab, uncheck the line to keep the system up
to date automatically). Reboot, go to the update site and install 819696.
Reboot, then restart the autoupdate service.

Hello Rick .. I couldn't find any errors, but I did what you suggested
anyway and downloaded from site. Funny, but there it was sitting there as a
critical update waiting to be downloaded :) ... I guess I just wait and see
what the next few days bring .. many thanks for your help.. Lee

To resolve the problem, I suggest you to try the following:

1. Verify if the update is installed properly, by verifying the Quartz.dll
file version and Time Modified. Please refer:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;819696

2. If the update is successfully installed already (DLL version version must
be same in your system, in accordance to the above URL), try the following
steps:

1. Click Start | Run | Regedit
2. Click File | Export and backup the whole registry and save it as a .reg
file to a safer location.
3. Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\DirectX\dx819696

In the right-pane, change the value for "IsInstalled" to 1.
