Windows Thinks I Have New Hardware

A Baffled User

I installed the software for a printer onto my new HP notebook computer
running on Windows XP Home Edition SP2 a week or so ago. It works fine,
appears in Control Panel under Printers, etc.

Suddenly today, every time I restart the computer, I get a "Windows found
new hardware. Shall we look for/install the software?" message. What's that
about, and how can I get rid of it?

The printer is turned off right now if for any reason that could make a
difference.

I'd say turn on the printer and go ahead and let it look for new hardware.
At the end of it it will probably tell you what it thinks you've added and
either install drivers for it or tell you that it can't do so. Either way
letting it look for new hardware isn't going to break anything.

Okay, thanks. I'll try that the next time I reboot. If anything abnormal
happens, I'll let you know.
