I have a system problem, again. So I loaded the Support Tools from the
Windows XP CD-Rom. The installation instructions tell you to refer to
"Windows Support Tools online tool documentation file Suptools.chm. I have
spent a considerable amount of time on Microsoft sites and search engines
trying to locate this file. I can not find it. There are references to it,
but not the file itself. Does anyone know where I can get a copy of this file
so that I can use the support tools? Thanks.

C:\WINDOWS\Help\suptools.chm

Paste the following line into Start | Run and click OK...

%windir%\Help\suptools.chm

You just get one page if Support Tools are not installed telling how to
install from the XP CD, etc., if Support Tools are installed you get over a
770 KB file full of stuff.

To install Windows Support Tools
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/tools_howto.mspx

Windows Support Tools
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/tools_overview.mspx

Windows XP Service Pack 2 Support Tools
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...76-9bb9-4126-9761-ba8011fabf38&displaylang=en

Using the Windows XP support tools
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/directory/worldwide/en-gb/utility.asp

Using the Windows XP support tools (Part 2)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/directory/worldwide/en-gb/utility2.asp

Using the Windows XP support tools (Part 3)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/directory/worldwide/en-gb/utility3.asp

After installation, there should be a shortcut to Support Tools Help.
Start Menu\Programs\Windows Support Tools

And a shortcut to the Release Notes (readme.htm).

Thanks Wes, however, the suptools.chm file is not on my system. Neither were
any shortcuts installed to the desktop. Running %windr%\Help\suptools.chm
produced a file not found exception. The links produced "Page Not Available"
errors on the browser.

The tools were correctly loaded from the CD using
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306794 as a guide without error. The files
listed in the enclosed Readme file were loaded to C:\program files\support
tools as well as appending the support tools file to the system PATH.
Everything seems to be correct as described in Readme and 306794. Just need
to know how to use them, the exe files will run from the command line
interface.

Hi Curt,

Except that three of the links not only do not work, I cannot find the
articles any more either.

There is a 7.01 KB (7,179 bytes) SUPTOOLS.CH_ file on my XP Pro SP2 CD in
the I386 folder. SUPTOOLS.CH_ is the compressed version of the 15KB
suptools.chm file.

I'm guessing the larger suptools.chm file is probably in one of the cab
files in \SUPPORT\TOOLS on the CD.

On my other machine there is a shortcut on the Start menu...
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Windows Support
Tools\Support Tools Help

The target for Support Tools Help is to:

C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\BINARIES\helpctr.exe -mode
C:\WINDOWS\help\st.xml

The line probably wrapped, there is one space between -mode C:\WINDOWS

Paste that line into Start | Run and it opens Help and Support (helpctr.exe)
with the 770KB C:\WINDOWS\help\suptools.chm loaded.

hh suptools.chm::/suptools_overview.htm pasted in Start | Run opens the same
thing without Help and Support starting.

I just noticed that after the installation of the Support Tools, the 15KB
C:\WINDOWS\help\suptools.chm file must have been renamed to
C:\WINDOWS\help\suptools_old.chm. Probably happened during the
installation.

Remove the 123 to E-mail me and I will send you a copy of the 770KB
suptools.chm file.
