I have Windows XP pro and yesterday (2/2/04), either through a virus
or my attempt to load a program (or both), my windows froze up , I
shut it down and got a black screeen with "windows shut down
incorrectly.....choose safe mode, safe mode with ...., I choose
start windows normally and a white bar went
across screen and that's all she wrote. I ran norton disk and it
said no
virus.
I had another hard drive that I formated to use because I wanted to
see if I
could salvage the info I had on my original HD. I can access the
info, on
everything, but my personal file that I had setup as ADMIN with
password, it says access denied.
Is there ANYWAY to get in to this? I have some documents/photos that
I
really would like to save.
Anyone have a clue to what might have happened to cause Windows to
crash?
Any info to get the HD going again without totally reinstalling
Windows?
What to do if this happens again?

TIA!!

Lynn, let me introduce you to my favourite application - Drive Image 7. It's
£40 but worth every penny. I recommend that EVERYONE buys it - now. It's
saved me a lot of grief. It will take a snapshot of your system, which you
store to another drive/partition or to removable media. Depending on the
size of the partition you wish to back-up, the process could take from 10-60
minutes. When you have your system set up exactly as you want it, run the
application and follow the wizard. Back-up done, you know that, if the worst
happens, restoration will take an hour at most and not all day! I had to use
it last night - it works perfectly and sure saves you a lot of hassle.

As to your current predicament - search help and support for 'take
ownership'. Make sure you're online when you do this, and you will find a
MSKB article that should sort you out.

Thank you Cerridwen.
I did indeed find it on my own after your help.
I can now access the info in that file.
I'm now trying to find out how to access my outlook files.

Thanks so much!!

Lynn
