Windows Stability

My computer's operating system recently became "corrupt"
(proably due to a virus), and I lost everything. Since I
have reinstalled Windows XP, I am getting a strange error
message that reads as follows:

"Files that are required for Windows to run properly have
been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain
system stability, Windows must restore the original
versions of these Files.

Insert your Windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM now."

However, when I insert the CD, nothing happens. I just
get a menu for all these different things, but nothing
seems to help the problem.

Have any of you ever seen this problem and known how to
fix it? It's making me batty, and my computer doesn't
seem to run properly because of it. Everytime I try to
install software (like my Palm software, or digital
camera software), the computer freaks out and trashes the
operating system again. I've had to reinstall Windows
three times in the past two weeks! Please send me some
tips if you can. Thanks!

I would suggest performing a "clean install" using this procedure:

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. ==> Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall.

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

9. If you happen to run into any installation difficulties, use the following resources:

.
When system files become corrupt, this can be caused by
faulty RAM, ( bad memory ), so I suggest running a test
using a diagnostic utility.
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp or check out this
one;
http://www.tufftest.com/ttp01.htm and; http://www.v-
com.com/product/fi_ind.html
Running system file checker will help temproarily,
start/run and type; sfc /scannow, with that space.
