Windows Sounds resets itself

I am using Vista Business. Every time I restart my windows sounds reset
themselves. I have numerous custom profiles, and no matter which one I use,
it resets itself to the default and just about everything I do makes a sound.
I change it, and the next time I start up or log off or log on (lost
hibernate and sleep (mine's got insomnia) is now out of the question). There
is no pattern as to when they turn back on that I can identify. After a
while, it just starts making sounds (mostly like the windows ding) all on its
own. It is more like playing a pinball machine than using a computer. There
are some sounds I would like, but for now it seems like all or none (mute the
speakers).

Thanks

I have found that in order to keep your sound changes, you MUST press the Apply
button after each and every change. Works for me.
