Hello,

Windows (XP) suddenly decides to shut down randomly and
it's driving me mad!!! If it happens whilst there's
sound on then it is preceded by a second of juddering
(i.e. skipped music) and then it just restarts. There
are no device conflicts or faults that I can see and
there are no error messages upon reboot.

How strange, and help would be gladly appreciated...

Hi,

Please make sure that you have turned of the 'reboot on
error' feature. Right-click 'My Computer' and display
properties. Click on the Advanced Tab and then 'Startup
and Recovery' button. Uncheck the 'Automatically reboot'
option.

This way you will at least see why the machine is
rebooting (a message).

Regards,

Tim

First, make sure that the 'shutdown on crash' feature is disabled. Right
click on My COmputer, choose Properties, Advanced, and the Startup and
Recovery button. You'll see the checkbox there. With this disabled, you
should actually see error messages relating to what is actually crashing.

Hi, I'm having a similar problem that's causing huge
aggrivations...here's the important bits of info that I
grabbed when the computer told me it was shutting down:

"the system is shutting down.....

shutdown was from NT Authority/systems

remote procedure call (RPC) terminated unexpectedly"

....then it just has a count down timer prompting me to
save my work. I'm using a dialup for that computer to
AT&T...is it related to that at all?

Thanks in advance,

Casey

Sounds to me like you're infected by the blaster worm. Try updating your
AV software, or look for a "blaster remover" program.
