I've been rather carelessly tinkering with my Windows Services after
Googling a number of somewhat contradictory information pages. Now I am
experiencing some, not too serious, problems with my 56K DialUp Modem
Connections. The RAS services keep setting themselves to Disabled, even
though I keep setting them back to Automatic. There are also other less
obvious problems, non-fatal but very irritating. After connecting, most
other applications running freeze, and I am unable to start any new
ones. This lasts between 3 and 9 minutes. Even if Eudora is running I am
unable to download Mail. Oddly, it doesn't affect my News App, XNews.
Right now the rest of my PC is frozen, but I am happily (?) downloading
News

Is there an app which can reset all services to their default settings.
As I've said, there is contradictory advice on the web

Hi Will, go and get Black Vipers` list from here.
Use the `Safe` column to set your services.

That`s how I`ve got mine set up.

Many thanks, twice over. I had an old Black Viper PDF, but when I
searched for an update I found the site had vanished. Glad to have the
new link. Will read this carefully, and see what happens

Unfortunately that page is a virtually unusable mess here using both
Firefox and Opera. No doubt it's fine using IE [SPIT!} :-(

Cheers,

Roy

Works fine in Opera 9 and IE6 for me, there is absolutly no difference
in the way the page is viewed and/or saved as a web page archive with
either browser. If you want a copy of the archived page, send me an
email at (e-mail address removed) (remove the -nospam-) and I'll
send you a copy of each. I'll even include the page as an image file
that you can view with any image editor, you can't get much better
than that.

Yyup. Just pulled it up on mozilla: broken. IE 6 works fine though.

Perhaps the mirror of the Viper pages over at Major Geeks are better?

An Opera user and you do not know

view menu -> style -> change from author mode to user mode.

I use Opera about 50% of the time, Firefox for the rest. I swap and change
them for my default browser dependent upon which has fixed all oustanding
vulnerabilities. I've never changed that setting, so thnks for pointing it
out as a possibility. It worked. I can't say I've come across that problem
before with Opera, maybe the default setting was changed in the last
revision.

I really only wanted to download that page to compare with a much earlier
version which I keep handily by me printed out for quick usage. Quite a few
changes, and I found it rather odd that, for example, no mention was made
of DCOM which is hardly a third party supplied service.Although on looking
back I see that my earlier version doesn't list it either. Odd. I found
some of the choices in the column headed 'MINE' to be a little eccentric.
Still I suppose whoever is responsible for this current version (MartinZ ?)
is entitled to his personal preferences. I've no particular reason to
suppose they are good choices though, or bad for that matter. Best ignored
I'd say.

I live and learn, so thanks again for showing me something to learn.

Cheers,

Install the "User Agent Switcher" extension for FF, and then try it.
It works like a champ. It doesn't load IE, it just makes FF emulate
it and report that it is IE. I've never found an IE-only site yet
that it won't resolve (although I haven't tried it at MS).

Just turn it on as required - its especially useful for those web pages
where the author insists on purple lettering on a black background ;)

Checking my archive the last blackviper page I have shows

I find an entry like that on neither the current pages, nor my archived
version from 24/10/2002. Ho hum.

No amount of spoofing as IE6, Netscape 4.8, Opera 8.51 stops those current
pages appearing as a mess in Firefox Firefox 1.5.0.5. You'd think their
author might know a little better, and proves again that you can never rely
on just one browser.
