I have recently purchased a new computer that came with windows xp home
edition and i started the basic updates like service pack 2 and securtiy
updates but whenever i put SP2 on my system the hole computer gets messed up
in a complete restarting frenzy to the point where i cant get onto the
desktop. My question is do you neeed SP1 before you can place SP2 on a system
or should it matter.

If you purchased a new computer, it probably already came with SP2. SP2 has
been out for 2 years now. Check the installation media that came with your
computer or your documentation. Certainly if the computer is from a major
computer mftr. like Dell, HP, Sony, etc. it was preinstalled with XP SP2.

The answer to your question is that no, you don't need to install SP1 first.
SP2 is inclusive. So there are other reasons that you are having
difficulties, but there isn't any way to tell what they are from your post.

Hi

You need to install SP1 before installing SP2. All the Updates in SP1 are
included in SP2. After installing SP2 you will need to install several
later Updates though.

Hi

Sorry my last posting was wrong. You **don't** to install SP1 before SP2.

Have you downloaded/installed the latest drivers for your graphics card from
the manufacturer's web site - not through Windows Update?

SP2 includes everything in SP1. However, how do you know that SP2 needs to
be installed?

To check if SP2 is already installed:
Click Start/Control Panel/System, then check the General Tab for what
Service Pack is installed.
