My server is called HP350 running Windows Server 2003

It has a NIC with static IP address 192.168.40.1 & mask 255.255.255.0

I think that I may have DNS problem(s).

HP350 is the only File Server on the LAN

Some of my W98 PCs can't browse the network, but I can see them from other
W98 workstations when I Click on Neighbourhood Network

From my workstation CompqWS1:

I can PING HP350 OK (which is 192.168.40.1)

I can PING CompqWS1 OK (which is 192.168.40.27)

I can't PING VctraWS2 (which is 192.168.40.26)

I can PING 192.168.40.26

Select My Server (I can see HP350 icon)

Launch nslookup

*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.40.1: Time out

Default Server: unknown

Address 192.168.40.1

(If I type 'server HP350' this would remove the problem of finding the
server, but should'nt I be able to have this set automatically?)

However if I type in my current XP workstation name of CompqWS1 at the >
prompt I would get:

Server: Unknown

Address 192.168.40.1

Name: CompqWS1.office.local

Address: 192.168.40.27

However if I type in another W98 workstation name of VctraWS2 at the >
prompt I would get:

Server: Unknown

Address 192.168.40.1

*** Unknown can't find VctraWS2: Non-existent domain

What should I do to fix these problems!

Just downed and up my server and now the 'Default Server unknown' message
has disappeared. So thats 1 step forward anyway!

Hi BtConnect,

I'm a little confused with what your trying to tell use. Do this on the server. If you double click "my network places",
then double click "Entire Network", then double click "Microsoft Windows Network" , do you see your netbios domain
name here? If you double click this, do you see all the Win98 PC listed and the Windows 2003 File server listed
here?

or are you telling use that some Win98 computers can browse to the server through "My Network Places" and some
cannot?
Can you get to the file server by doing the following, go to start run, then type \\192.168.40.1\ and get to the shares
on the server? Can you do this by name \\hp350\ and see the shares?

Is this a workgroup or a domain?
Do you have Wins installed?
Do you have DNS installed?
Do you have a AD domain controller?

Win98 PC do not register with dns directly as would a windows XP Client. We have to a alternate way of doing this
(DHCP, Enable updates for DNS clients that do not support dynamic updates). If your running DHCP server? So
browsing and DNS will be two different things here. Are the Clients on the same subnet as the DC? If so they should
be able to arp for the server. Do you have the support tools loaded off the Windows 2003 CD? If not load them on the
Server. Then run the following command and post it here. browstat sta >hp350.txt.

The "Cannot find server name for address 192.168.40.1" can be related to not having a reverse lookup zone set? Do
you have one set? It also could be that you have the zone but not PTR record for the server. Check the zone for the
PTR record. If not add one. It also could be that you are missing the Name Server on the Name server tab on the
reverse lookup zone.

From a command prompt at the client type the following
nslookup (press enter)
server 192.168.40.1 (press enter)
What is the output on your server?

Can I get a Ipconfig /all from the Server? Can you post it here please.
