Windows Server & CALs

Hi
I am just a newbie when it comes to the licensing of Server and CALs, I am
wondering if I might get a wee bit of help in this regard. For example if I
was to purchase Windows 2000 Server with 5 CALs what does this mean? Does it
mean I can set up a Windows 2000 Server and then use that same software CD to
install on 5 more computers? Or do I need to go and purchase 5 more Windows
2000 CDs and then I can use those 5 Windows 2000 Systems to interface with
the Windows 2000 Server? ( Sorry for being obtuse just a habit of mine). I
appreciate any help anyone could offer in a clear understanding of the
licensing, thanks :)

Nyet....CALs are *Client* Access Licenses....and hence, are for your
users/workstations. If you want 5 servers running Windows 2000 Server , you
need five server licenses for it.

Win2k Pro? If that's what you want to use on your workstations, sure
(although I don't know where you'll find Win2k Pro outside of ebay now -
XP's the latest desktop OS.)

Yes, if you're using per-device mode in your licensing scheme (note that
running the license logging service is not mandatory and it doesn't work
right; keep track of your licenses manually).

I suggest you call Microsoft licensing or a good reseller with any/all
licensing questions.... it can get very confusing. If you are thinking of
purchasing a new server OS, look into Small Business Server 2003 - it's
going to be cheaper in the long run anyway, and it comes with all kinds of
other goodies like Exchange, etc.
