Noticed an odd behaviour with effective permissions when directories were
moved from one location to another on a Windows Server 2003 file system. In
particular, full administrative rights, although not lost, showed as
non-existent when tested using the effective permissions tab under Security /
Advanced in Windows Explorer. Is this a known issue?

I personally never use effective permissions to determine what access a user
has because I have found it not to be accurate in some cases. Maybe a reboot
would clear it up for you.

Thanks, Mark. The directories were moved on the same volume. I knew moving
volumes could be an issue. The KB doc is useful to me.

My real question is why did the effective rights blank out when these files
were moved. Restarting the machine was a non-issue. That is, although I
still had full control permissions to the files and directories, the
effective rights tab showed that I had no permissions. I just wondered if
this is a known bug.
