Hi All - I'm just getting into setting up a 'digital
furnace' on my home network. My initial goals are to set
up a box for internet sharing, file sharing, and print
sharing, but eventually look into setting up a web server
to host some sites I maintain.

Now, the question: Can I do this through Windows XP Pro,
or do I have to spend the money to move up to Windows 2000
Server or Server 2003? Advantages/disadvantages?

Thanks for your considered input!

Rick

Hi Rick,

I'll address what you brought up here. If I don't cover something or you'd
like further explanation, don't hesitate to ask.

Windows XP Professional can act as a box for internet sharting, file
sharing, print sharing, and as a web server. However, there are some
limitations to the extent in which it can be used.

1) Your file sharing is going to be restricted to no more than 10
connections to the XP Professional machine at any one time. If you have a
small network, this generally not an issue.

2) The web server that is installed is IIS 6.0, however it is a limited
version. It will only support one web site/one ftp site and there isn't as
much "customization" allowed to it. If you are just hosting one very basic
site, then this will most likely work for you. However, if you want finite
customization you may want to look into one of the server products.

Hope this helps.

One small correction - XP doesn't have IIS 6 - it has IIS 5.1 which is
similar to the one included with Windows 2000 Server... Thus some of
the IIS 6 specific information won't apply...

I was thinking about something else when I typed that.
