My wifes laptop is a Gateway with Vista on it and has Windows Security Center
on it and has AVG av and windows defender on it. Now it says that it cannot
find an avD program and that defender is not on. They are both allowed at
startup. Now AVG will not update. Any suggestions?

Engel has posted the solution I would recommend.

In addition to that, however, I would update both apps--you can do that by
going to the vendors web sites and downloading definitions directly:

Defender: www.microsoft.com/security/portal see the 32-bit definitions for
Defender in the right column, unless you are certain you are running a 64
bit version of Windows.

AVG http://www.grisoft.com/

And do full scans of your system.

What is happening may be a simple but or malfunction of the system that
links these apps to the security center, but it may also be a symptom of
malware in place.

An additional step I'd recommend is a scan with a rootkit detector--here's
AVG'S free one:

Hi, can't remember where I saw this but on Kaspersky forum this is what King
Grub said to do and it worked.
Sounds like the contents of the repository folder has become corrupt;
happens with all AV:s from time to time.

Try this:

Disable the WMI service.

Delete the c:\windows\system32\wbem\repository (don't worry - it's safe, and
it will be recreated automatically. This contains the information Security
Center displays).

Restart the WMI service.

Wait a few minutes until the repository folder has rebuilt itself (I
rebooted immediately once, and then the procedure failed).

Reboot.

Hello,

I have a similar problem: Norton Internet Security 2007 is not detected by
the Vista Security Center.
Can you please let me know , how a can disable and restart the WMI service
in Vista.

best regards,
Frans
