The windows security alert icon on my task bar keeps on giving a message
that automatic updates is turned off even though this is turned on. How
can I stop this?

Open Control panel, Security Center, click the option "Change the way
Security Center alerts me" in the left pane, deselect the box "Automatic
Updates", exit with OK.
