WINDOWS SEARCH taking too much real estate

Recently I installed Windows Search and now I'm sorry I did it. It spends a
lot of time indexing. It often takes up 98 to 100% of CPU for a couple of
hours when I'm supposed to be working. I don't leave my computer on
perpetually or it could probably catch up with things at night.

I uninstalled it once, but then the original search in explorer.exe also
didn't work. So I re-installed Windows Search. I'm assuming it is the same
as NMIndexing Service in Windows Services (is that true?). It is set for
Started, Manual.

Aside from not having any way of file searching (which would cripple me),
are there any repercussions if I turn it off?

What I would like to do is uninstall it, and revert back to the old,
original Search. If that's possible, I would need the procedure for
getting back the original search engine. Can we do that?

Uninstalling Windows Search v4.0 shouldn't affect your normal search. Did
you do it through Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs?

Read this article here

It may help out some.

A good replacement for Search (IMHO) is Agent Ransack if you don't want to
use XP's original search. You can get it here

If memory serves, the NMIndexing service is related to Nero's CD authoring
software. In Services, check whether the service's path in Properties points
to a Nero directory.

I've found this one a bit of a beggar - tried to disable it everywhere
(within Nero and set service to disabled), yet it still pops up from time to
time after a burn, chundering away at my resources.

Oh, and I second SC Tom's recommendation of Agent Ransack.

Thank you both. What words of wisdom. Both times I installed Windows
Search 4, it resided in Add & Remove Software. But the first time I
uninstalled it, the XP Search function no longer worked.

However, this time, the uninstall was complete, I haven't seen any ghosts in
the last couple of days, and better yet, the old XP search does work this
time. So thanks again, SC Tom.

Also, thanks for your comments, Olórin, about the NM Indexer - like we need
four or five indexers? I had gone to Event Viewer to check which things were
running. I just assumed the NM items were Windows Search because their 4 or
5 .exe files in Task Manager calls them "search" and "index" procedures. But
after I uninstalled Windows Search 4 and took another look at Task Manager
to see what was gone, the NM items were still there. That's when I googled
one of the NM files and sure enough - Nero.

I respect and appreciate all of you folks that get us out of jams every day.
