So, I guess if I have to ask it's not there anymore, but who knows? Is the
Windows Search Deskbar gone from Vista? You know, the one that allows you to
search from the taskbar?

Are you talking about the "Address" tool bar?
No, I mean this:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/web/desktop_search.mspx

And despite what the site says, it's also available in WDS Enterprise for XP
or 2003, which don't have the MSN Toolbar installed. I liked it a lot
because it searched as I typed instead of having to open a new window for
that. You could see it by rc on the taskbar and checking Windows Search
Deskbar.

The toolbar doesn't install or run on Vista. In general the search box on
the start menu is designed to achieve broadly similar functionality. You can
hit the start button or the Windows key and start typing ...

I know it doesn't install, because WDS 3.0 is part of Vista. But WDS 3.0 on
previous Windows versions has that toolbar. Now, instead of searching
instantly, I need to search from the start menu or from a new Explorer
window. Just great. Way to go improving the interface Microsoft.

Google Desktop Search wins in terms of speed (especially when searching
Outlook e-mails) and it indexes much more than the default Windows Indexer.
Windows is now slower searching non-indexed files and folders than the
original Windows Me and Windows XP SP1 hard disk search. What a shame!

I don't understand, did you not have to either hit a key combination, or
click to give the deskbar focus first anyways? Why is that any different
from hitting the Windows key or clicking on the start menu before you can
start typing? Same number of clicks or keystrokes.

Well, it was available right away, I could see what the last search term was
and the window that popped up was resizable so I could more easily see files
with long names, and movable or it could even be detached from the taskbar.
Maybe if I'm lucky I can self register de deskband.dll which contains the
deskbar for Windows Search.
