Windows root>\System31/hal.dll file Missing or Corrupt

My system failed to boot with above error message. I
could not find any way to get to restore so I instered my
XP CD and ended up with another windows set-up, but my
original windows did boot up ok when selected in the boot
process. Following advice from newsgroup I deleted the
second version of windows and removed it from the
boot.ini file but, I am now back to square one with the
same error message at boot. I have had to go thru another
windows set up (although cancel set-up before the license
acceptance message).
Any ideas?

Is your boot.ini bad?
